The US Food and Drug Administration on Saturday authorized the Pfizer vaccine for the Covid-19 virus for emergency use as coronavirus cases rage through the United States of America.
With this approval, millions of highly vulnerable people are set to receive the drug within a matter of days.
The authorization makes it a historic moment for the US in the fight against the pandemic, which has taken nearly 3,00,000 lives in the United States alone. With this, the United States has become the sixth country — after Britain, Bahrain, Canada, Saudi Arabia and Mexico — to give the vaccine a nod.
US President Donald Trump said that the first Pfizer coronavirus vaccine will be administered in the United States within the next 24 hours.
“Today, our nation has achieved a medical miracle. We have delivered a safe and effective vaccine in just 9 months. This is one of the greatest scientific accomplishments in history. It will save millions of lives and end the pandemic once and for all. The Pfizer vaccine is over 95% effective, far exceeding expectations. This vaccine will be free for all Americans. We have already begun shipping the vaccine to every state and zip code in the country. The first vaccine will be administered in less than 24 hours,” Trump said.
Shots of the vaccine for health workers and other health workers are expected to commence soon after the FDA approval for the vaccine, which is considered as one of the most potent drugs in from Pfizer Inc. and its German partner BioNTech.
This could prove critical as the threat for a bigger surge in cases was anticipated in the long, grim winter season. However, it will take months before the threat from the coronavirus is evaded as the pandemic has already claimed over 15 lakh lives worldwide.
A US government advisory panel had a day back recommended the emergency approval for the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, following which the FDA’s Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee (VRBPAC) voted 17 to 4 to recommend the vaccine.
